Realm magic

Back to list of tips and tricks

Using magic to trick and surprise your enemies, especially very powerful ones, is a lot of fun. Wonder which spells are best, and how to use them smart? Read on!

Generally, good Wizard realm spells are much more powerful than Priest realm spells, but there are a few useful priest spells as well. All priests can cast these spells.

Priest spells

  • «Dispel magic». First of all, note note that a level 1 temple in every province will let a priest (regent or lieutenant) cast this spell to nullify any hostile magic cast upon the province – very useful to get rid of those annoying Chaos «ward» spells that happen out of nowhere.
  • «Bless land». A level 3 temple lets a priest cast this spell, which increases the money you gain from taxing the province. Higher level priests can bless more adjacent provinces in one go. (Also note that blessing the provinces of other realms will improve that realm’s reaction to you.)
  • «Bless army». This spell will permanently give the affected unit(s) a slight combat boost. Higher-level priests can bless more armies per casting.

Other priest realm spells are less useful in my opinion.

Wizard spells

1. «Warding».

Required source/ley line level: 3.

Duration: End of next domain turn.

Cost: 5 gold and 5 regency pr province

This is a must-have spell! Warding a province means enemy units can’t move into or out of it – though yours can. Excellent for protecting your border provinces against the ravages of the Gorgon, or even trapping large, nasty forces (like the Gorgon himself and the Skeletons he surrounds himself with) in a single province so you can attack the rest of his realm. High Mage Aelies is the master of this spell, since at his level, he can ward 4 provinces at a time, but the following mages are also immediately capable of casting the spell:

  • Isaelie (regent of Sielwode)
  • The Wizard (regent of The Five Peaks)
  • Rhoubhe (regent of Rhoubhe)
  • The Sword Mage (lieutenant of Ghoere)
  • Wizard Hermedhie (non-landed realm)
  • The Gorgon

2. «Raze».

Required source/ley line level: 5.

Cost: 10 regency and 2 gold pr castle level

Although expensive, this is a fantastic spell when attacking a province with a high-level castle, as it will instantly burn the castle to the ground just like that. Some of the wizards that can cast this spell (without first having to learn it from a tome) include:

  • Fhileraene (regent of Tuarhievel)
  • The Second Swamp Mage (non-landed realm)
  • The Wizard (regent of The Five Peaks)
  • Rhoubhe (regent of Rhoubhe)
  • Caine (lieutenant of Endier)
  • Moerde Ranael (hireable lieutenant)
  • The Gorgon

3. «Legion of the Dead».

Required source/ley line level: 3.

Cost: 1 gold and 4 regency pr unit summoned

This excellent spell lets a wizard summon Skeletons. As well as being powerful army unit, summoning troops in the provinces of other realms can be used as a tricksy way to inavde enemy provinces without having to declare war. For maximum effect, use a lieutenant action to summon armies in an enemy province bordering yours or your allies’ during the third action of your domain turn. Once you have one unit there, you can now send in reinforcements of regulat units across the border despite not having declared war – and since you used your lieutenant action, you can send in the troops before the summoned unit has to fight any hostile troops defending the province. Once the action ends and a new turn begins, you occupy the province and can invest it before your enemy has time to react. Although this tends to result in the other realm declaring war on immediately after your investiture, your enemy and especially your enemy’s allies won’t be quite as angry with you as if you had declared war on them outright. Useful to gain a toehold in Markazor without attracting too much of the Gorgon’s attention yet. Some of the wizards that can cast this spell (without first having to learn it from a tome) include:

  • Rogr Aglongdier (regent of Ilien)
  • Wizard Eyeless One (non-landed realm)
  • Danita/Chimaera (regent of Chimaeron)
  • Caine (wizard of Endier)
  • The Sword Mage (lieutenant of Ghoere)
  • Rodel Garwen (hireable lieutenant)
  • The Gorgon

4. «Summoning».

Required source/ley line level: 3.

Cost: 2 gold and 5 regency pr unit summoned

This is a poorer version of Legion of the Dead which can be used to summon goblins and gnolls as well as skeletons (rarely worth it as those units cost money to upkeep and aren’t very good). Still, wizards with this spell have access to the tricks described above as well as to Skeleton armies once they reach level 10. Some of the wizards that can cast this spell (without first having to learn it from a tome) include:

  • Isaelie (regent of Sielwode)
  • Rhoubhe (regent of Rhoubhe)
  • Raile Valdhuine (hireable lieutenant)
  • The Gorgon

5. «Mass Destruction».

Required source/ley line level: 5.

Cost: 5 gold and 10 regency pr unit destroyed

Although expensive, this very useful spell can wipe out powerful units such as skeletons prior to a battle. Some of the wizards that can cast this spell (without first having to learn it from a tome)include:

  • Rogr Aglondier (regent of Ilien)
  • Harald Khorien (regent of Taeghas)
  • Danita/Chimaera (regent of Chimaeron)
  • Rhoubhe (regent of Rhoubhe)
  • The Gorgon

6. «Transport».

Required source/ley line level: 5.

Cost: 1 gold and 4 regency pr unit moved

This spell may be used to instantly teleport troops into any province you have a source in – another nice way to invade without declaring war, or simply bring up an unexpected threat in your enemy’s rear areas. Useful, but not indespensible. Some of the wizards that can cast this spell (without first having to learn it from a tome) include:

  • Llytha Damaan (lieutenant of Tuarhievel)
  • Torele Anviras (lieutenant of Talinie)
  • Laela Flaertes (regent of Tuornen)
  • Cheassal Brodic (hirable lieutenant)

7. «Dispel Realm Magic».

Required source/ley line level: 1.

Cost: 1 gold and 2 regency.

Wizard version of the identical priest spell. Some of the wizards that can cast this spell (without first having to learn it from a tome)include:

  • Clumine Dhoesone (lieutenant of Dhoesone)
  • Lassica Diem (lieutenant of Diemed)

Other wizard realm spells are less useful in my opinion.
