DON’T use Kjalnar

(Unless you are the ONLY group member that does so!)

If you go to almost any of the popular content creators for Elder Scrolls Online, nearly all of them will list Kjalnar’s Nightmare as the top damaging monster set in ESO for pretty much all PvE damage builds, Magicka or Stamina.

This has a way of leading players to start farming this set as if every Damage Dealer ought to be bringing this set to their groups. NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH! What those content creators either bury in the fine print or neglect to mention at all, is that ONLY ONE PLAYER PER GROUP CAN USE THIS SET! Only one player can proc the damage – and then the enemy will be immune to the stacks for the next 4 seconds. Now, in a trial, there are 8, sometimes 9 or 10 damage dealers. And only one can get any damage from the set – the others will get no damage at all from it. Even in a dungeon, there are at least 2, sometimes 3 DDs. That’s why you DO NOT BRING THIS SET TO GROUPS unless you are certain no one else will be bringing it also – otherwise, it will bring group DPS down, not up!

You may not want a full monster set at all – a Mythic Item and a one-piece of a monster set can work, or you can use head and shoulders from one of your two 5-piece sets, which leaves room for 2-piece weapons on both bars. However, in update 32 (Deadlands), monster sets can critically damage, which means many of them hit hard enough that they are worthwhile, and there are many other monster sets you can safely bring instead of Kjalnar’s. As an all-rounder set that should fit most builds, playstyles and situations, I can recommend the Stormfist set.

This set will proc from any kind of damage, melee and ranged, direct damage and DoT. Its 4 meter radius means it can hit multiple enemies if they are reasonably closely stacked – and the damage is good. It’s also a set that’s easy to get – once you hit 160 CP, Tempest Island vet is easily farmable, even if you’re new to the game; all you need to know is to stay close to the last boss at all times EXCEPT when she spreads her big red AoE; get out of that attack (I roll dodge, but sprinting should be fine) and then when the red disappears, IMMEDIATELY get right back in (I tend to sprint or charge here). Granted, the 1-piece bonus isn’t much use for Magicka DDs, though the damage proc works for all types now. Maybe Magicka DDs will get more mileage out of Nerien’eth. Or for pure single target melee DPS, Selene hits like a truck. If you’re struggling with one-shot mechanics, Iceheart provides a damage shield that can sometimes save your bacon – keeping that set at least as a backup in case of trouble is highly recommended! The only other thing you should NOT do, however, is scroll down on the page of the content creator I’ve been screenshotting from before and end up with what he lists as the second best set: Do NOT bring Maw of the Infernal either! This set can potentially kill your tank by spawning a Daedroth right on top of the tank, completely obscuring their view of their own character. Short-tempered tanks have been known to instantly quit groups when this set procs. So forget what you read about best “Best in Slot” DPS monster sets, and instead bring something that will help your group instead of hinder it!
